I Left With Only a Bible

The signs in my neighborhood were abundant; there was an estate sale on Fry Ave. On my way to Brookshires, I came upon the ubiquitous ranch style house with its life-long inhabitants now abruptly gone and a real estate sign planted in the yard. “Maybe they have a dining room table left,” I wondered to myself. Upon entering, I saw however that the lonely house was nearly depleted. Preparing to leave, my eye caught a bookshelf with perhaps five small books left, two of which were Bibles. One of the Bibles was old and had the name of the former owner inside with a “Democrat” sticker next to the name. I was struck with the fact that the Bible probably symbolized everything essential to its owner – now gone. He was a Christian and a Democrat, and I questioned with a chuckle which fact was primary for him! I purchased the well- used, written-in Bible for a dollar - but it felt priceless to me. It was, and is, the very essence of a life well-lived. May it be so for each one of us!

Psalms 119:105 - Thy word [is] a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.

2 Timothy 3:16-17 - All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

The briefest moments are the most important.
